For centuries and centuries, Elba's main resource had been iron ore. Elba tirelessly gave her iron to anyone who desired to dig in her soil and made her lords rich and powerful. The mining industry continued up until recently when the last mine was closed in 1983. Just as iron characterised the economic and social life of the eastern half of the island, the excavation and processing of granite was fundamental to the inhabitants of the western side. They specialised in the production of huge columns for temples, like those of the Pantheon in Rome. Even today we can still hear the clinking sound of chisels which, with ancient expertise, create smooth forms from large blocks of hard rock.
