elba island excursion

Elba's fame has derived from its wine production which boasts a long tradition. Elban wine, already famous during Roman times ("Insula vini ferax" as Pliny the Old defined it), delighted the tables of the popes in the Middles Ages and were sailed to the most important commercial ports in the 18th century. Today the island can be proud of its fine "DOC" wines "Elba Rosé", "Elba White", "Elba Red", "Elba Red Riserva", "Ansonica", "Elba White" champagne or, to accompany dessert, "Aleatico" and "Sweet Ansonica". All of these wines are excellent with the traditional dishes of the Elban cuisine - some of whose ancient recipes can be traced back to the poor dishes eaten in the kitchens of miners or granite chisellers, today however appreciated by gourmets, including inviting home-made sweets still browned in wood-burning ovens.
