Arezzo was renowned for the strength of its brick walls, and also for its red pottery. It was an important Roman base during the Second Punic War.This town stands 296 m. above sea level on a hilly slope near a wide plateau on which open the Valdarno, Casentino and Valdichiana valleys. Many important people were beorn and lived there such as : Francesco Petrarca (poet),Guittone d'Arezzo (poet), Pietro Aretino (poet), Leone Leoni (goldsmith), Giorgio Vasari (painter and architect), Guido d'Arezzo (inventor of the stave).
