Massa- Carrara is a province of Tuscany made up of 2 towns: Massa and Carrara. The municipal territory of Massa extends for 94,13 square kilometres in an area prevalently mountainous between the Alpi Apuane and the sea. Erected as a Lordly centre, Massa suffered numerous modifications to its territorial aspect over the centuries. The municipal territory of Carrara extends for 71,27 square kilometres in an area essentially mountainous, on the coastal slopes of the Apuane Alpi.Since antiquity the place where Carrara arose was celebrated for the production of marble and its name is said to have origins from Liguria-Apuana roots which signify ěpietraî (stone).
